Universal City, CA, May 10, 2018 – The countdown to the extinction of “Jurassic Park—The Ride” begins as Universal Studios Hollywood excavates the site in preparation for the 2019 arrival of “Jurassic World Ride,” inspired by Universal Pictures’ blockbuster film franchise.

“Jurassic Park—The Ride” will officially become extinct on September 3, 2018.

In 1996, Universal Studios Hollywood redefined theme park thrill rides with the unprecedented introduction of “Jurassic Park—The Ride,” based on three-time Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg’s epic film.  Hailed as a technological achievement of triumph and wizardry, the ride featured newly debuted principles of hydraulic physics, mechanics and space-age robotics.  Working in partnership with scientists, palaeontologists and aerospace engineers, Universal Creative—the team that develops Universal theme park rides—brought to life one of the most compelling rides ever created. Life-sized and lifelike animatronic dinosaurs, some towering over five-stories high, freely roamed the earth at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Twenty-two years later—and after sending millions of guests back to the Jurassic era for menacing face-to-face encounters with such predators as Stegosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Dilophosaurus, Velociraptors and the Tyrannosaurus rex—“Jurassic Park—The Ride” will become extinct in preparation for a new, next-generation experience that’s even more immersive and technologically advanced.  The new ride will pay homage to Jurassic Park and will reimagine this landmark film franchise for theme park guests.  The Jurassic Cove restaurant and Jurassic Outfitters retail store also will close with the attraction and reopen with the new experience in 2019.

“The one thing that the history of evolution has taught us is that life finds a way” was famously uttered by Jurassic Park’s Dr. Ian Malcom.  In the spirit of this pledge, Universal Studios Hollywood is rallying guests and fans to visit The Entertainment Capital of L.A. as it celebrates this epic ride and prepares for the arrival of the “Jurassic World Ride.”

Plus, in honor of the blockbuster action-adventure that brought dinosaurs out of extinction a quarter century ago, Universal Studios Hollywood in partnership with Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment will host the Jurassic Park 25th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, May 11; Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13. To learn more and to purchase tickets to this highly coveted event, please visit www.UniversalStudiosHollywood.com/JP25.

Announcing The Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award, the Joe Kubert Future Storyteller Scholarship, and the Joe Kubert Jumpstart Project

5/8/2018

May 8, 2018 - Iconic comic book artist Joe Kubert--and his commitment to teaching the next generation of comic book creators--will be honored with a major new award and two scholarship programs announced today. The first ever Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award will be awarded at the second annual Comic Con Revolution, to be held May 19 & 20 at the Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, CA.

The Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award is designed to recognize outstanding comic book creators who exemplify both Joe Kubert’s artistic talent and his commitment to nurturing the comic book community. In addition, the Joe Kubert Future Storyteller Scholarship is being established by Atomic Crush Events for first and second year students of The Kubert School, while the Joe Kubert Jumpstart Project will help graduates begin their career. The Kubert School will determine the recipient of the scholarship and jumpstart project based on merit and honors. The recipient of the Joe Kubert Jumpstart Project will be named by the school at this year’s graduation and the Joe Kubert Future Storyteller Scholarship will go into effect next year, allowing students to apply for the scholarship. The award and scholarship program were announced by The Kubert School in tandem with Atomic Crush Events, which runs Comic Con Revolution and will host the annual Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award Ceremony.

“With the Joe Kubert Future Storyteller and Jumpstart Project, Atomic Crush Events has not only shown their commitment to building and investing in future creators for our industry but ultimately their love for the medium and their drive to have it not only succeed but thrive,” said Andy Kubert. “Thank you so much for this endeavor.”

“Joe Kubert was an incredible talent and his impact on the industry both on and off the page really can’t be overstated,” said Atomic Crush Events Partner and Co-Founder Mike Scigliano. “This annual award and scholarship program will honor Joe’s legacy and help nurture the next generation of comic book creators.” The award will be presented annually at Comic Con Revolution Ontario.

The recipient of the Joe Kubert Future Storyteller Scholarship will receive a one-time scholarship. Funding for the first annual Joe Kubert Future Storyteller Scholarship is provided by matching contributions from Atomic Crush Events, GeekChic Promotions, Storm King Comics and Superfan Promotions. Interested individuals and companies can also contribute to the scholarship program. The scholarship recipients will be announced later this year.

The recipient of the Joe Kubert Jumpstart Project will receive an artist alley table at any of the Comic Con Revolution events for one year and credit with SGX Print to create a pop-up banner and a limited print run of comic or art books. Storm King Comics' Sandy King Carpenter will review the winning graduates’ portfolio, and Superfan Promotions will consult the winner of the award on how to best promote their work.

“Mike Scigliano and Atomic Crush Events have come up with an amazing opportunity for our grads,” said Adam Kubert. “They really care about our industry and helping out young creators. I couldn't think of a better or more creative way to jumpstart a young artist's career than the Joe Kubert Jumpstart Project. My Dad was the ultimate storyteller and I know the student that receives this award will work to be one as well."

Widely beloved and acknowledged as one of the greatest comic book artists, Joe Kubert is most frequently associated with his work on Hawkman and Sgt Rock for DC Comics, his illustrations of Tarzan, and his gripping war stories. As The New York Times wrote after his death in 2012, “Mr. Kubert was often described as a war artist, but as he made clear in interviews and in his work, it was far more accurate to call him an antiwar artist. His distinctive visual style—raw, powerful and unstinting in emotional immediacy—was ideally suited to capturing the brutality of battle, and capture it he did, over more than a half-century.”

In 1976, Kubert and his wife Muriel established The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, NJ. Today, The Kubert School is the country’s only accredited trade school for comic-book artists, offering students a comprehensive three-year program. The first graduating class of 1978 included bestselling Swamp Thing artist Stephen R. Bissette, Tarzan artist Thomas Yeates, and Rick Veitch, creator of The One. Alumni include artists Kevin Colden, Amanda Conner, Shane Davis, Jan Duursema, Scott Kolins, Steve Lieber, Alex Maleev, Tom Mandrake, Rags Morales, Tom Raney, Bart Sears, Eric Shanower, and Timothy Truman; writer and inker Karl Kesel, Eisner award-nominated Jared K. Fletcher; acclaimed colorist Matt Hollingsworth; DC Comics VP of Manufacturing Administration Nick Napolitano, and Archie Comics President Mike Pellerito. Current faculty include his sons, the bestselling artists Adam and Andy Kubert, Mike Chen, Jan Duursema and others.

The Joe Kubert Distinguished Storyteller Award event will be held at Comic Con Revolution on Saturday May 19 at 5:30 in Ballroom B in the Ontario Convention Center. More information about the award and the convention, visit  comicconrevolution.com/ontario and follow the convention on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Comic Con Revolution, the Inland Empire’s only comic convention, is expanding for the first time to two full days of programming, featuring over 160 Exhibitors and nearly 200 guests including Jason Aaron (Star Wars, Thor, Scalped), Greg Baldwin (Samurai Jack, Avatar: The Last Airbender), Sandy King Carpenter (Film Producer & Comic Writer), Howard Chaykin (American Flagg!, Satellite Sam), Ming Chen (AMC’s Comic Book Men) Matthew Clark (Doom Patrol, Outsiders), Chris Claremont (Uncanny X-Men), Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series), Neo Edmund (Power Rangers), Susan Eisenberg (Justice League), Carols Ferro (Gears of War), Derek Fridolfs (Li’l Gotham, Batman: Arkham Unhinged), Steven Gordon (X-Men: Evolution), Travis Hanson (Life of the Party: Realities of an RPG’er), Ray-Anthony Height (X-Men Blue, Superb), Tom Hodges (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Herb Jefferson Jr. (Battlestar Galactica), Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond, The Cloverfield Experiment), Scott Koblish (Deadpool, Excalibur), Jim Krueger (Universe X, Earth X), Mike Kunkel (Herobear and the Kid), Loren Lester (Batman: The Animated Series), Mike Mathew (Star Wars, She-Hulk), Jonboy Meyers (The Inhumans, Teen Titans), Todd Nauck (Young Justice, Teen Titans Go!), Dustin Nguyen (Descender, DC Secret Hero Society), Fabian Nicieza (Deadpool & X-Force), Diane Pershing (Batman: The Animated Series – Voice of Poison Ivy), Andrea Romano, Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo), Peter Shinkoda (Daredevil, Falling Skies), Cat Staggs (Wonder Woman, Smallville), Art Thibert (Ultimate Spider-Man, Trinity), Tommy Walker (Daredevil, Henry Danger), Marv Wolfman (Marvel’s Blade, New Teen Titans) and Timothy Zahn (Star Wars Novelist).  Additional announcements will be made as guests continue to confirm and support the show.

About Joe Kubert
Born in 1926, Joe Kubert began his comics career at the age of eleven as an apprentice in Harry “A” Chesler’s comic book production house. He worked in the industry for the rest of his life, and in his more than sixty years in the field he produced countless memorable stories for countless characters, including DC’s Hawkman, Tarzan, Enemy Ace, Batman and the Flash. Kubert also edited, wrote and illustrated the DC title SGT. ROCK, which, beginning under its original title OUR ARMY AT WAR, he contributed to for thirty years.

In 1952, Kubert was a principal in the creation of the first 3-D comic book (Three Dimension Comics Vol. 1, No. 1), and his pioneering development of 3-D comics continued with the early appearances of what would become his best-known creation — a heroic caveman named Tor and his adventures “One Million Years Ago.” Kubert was also one of the first creators to embrace the long-form version of comics that became known as graphic novels, with his first two works in this medium being a graphic novel of Tor and the war adventure Abraham Stone. In 1996 he produced Fax From Sarajevo, a gripping graphic narrative that earned him accolades in the mainstream and trade press alike. He followed that success with two more historical graphic novels — Yossel: April 19, 1943 (2003) and Jew Gangster: A Father’s Admonition (2005) — as well as crafting two new adventures for DC’s iconic soldier with SGT. ROCK: BETWEEN HELL AND A HARD PLACE (2003) and SGT. ROCK: THE PROPHECY (2007).

Kubert was also a pioneer in the realm of comics education. In 1976 he founded the first accredited school devoted solely to the art of cartoon graphics: The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, New Jersey, which has since produced many of today’s leading cartoonists. Pursuing this educational path further, in 1998 he established a series of correspondence courses under the banner of Joe Kubert’s World of Cartooning, and in 1999 Watson-Guptill published his book Superheroes: Joe Kubert’s Wonderful World of Comics, a guide to the art of creating powerful comic book characters. Two of his five children, Adam and Andy, have also achieved great popularity as comic book artists. Joe Kubert passed away on August 12, 2012.

Terrifying Dark Zone Expands in 2018 to Include More than 15 Haunted Attractions, and Scare Zone by Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Fright Fest
LONG BEACH, CA - Midsummer Scream, the world’s largest Halloween and horror convention, is thrilled to announce a larger Hall of Shadows dark zone than fans have ever experienced before. Throughout the July 29 - 29 weekend, guests will have the opportunity to explore the enormous Hall of Shadows dark zone, which will include more than 15 haunted attractions and displays, a scare zone bursting with monsters from Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Fright Fest, a live performance stage, and more than 30 specialty vendors.

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”, CalHauntS is returning once again to create an elaborate entry façade for Hall of Shadows; this year, guests will venture into the crumbling ruins of Castle Frankenstein, featuring a pair of 14-foot-high turrets, a sinister laboratory, and classic monsters lurking in the shadows, ready to frighten guests brave enough to enter their domain.
Picture
Once inside the Hall of Shadows, fans will find more than 30 exhibitors, showing off their companies and wares in the dark - Light Up Masks, Haunted Orange County, The Cromwell Estate, and Stroke of Midnight Studios, to name just a few.

A performance stage has been added to Hall, which will feature variety acts throughout the weekend, from Twirly the Clown, and Mudd the Magnificent, to a titillating Horror Fashion Show by Ama Lea's Poltergeists and Paramours.

For the first time at Midsummer Scream, the Hall of Shadows will feature a scare zone from a major theme park. Leaving the vendor and performance stage area, guests will venture through the fog and navigate 50 feet of the most frightening monsters Six Flags Magic Mountain’s Fright Fest can conjure under the direction and expertise of makeup master Scott Ramp and his team of talented artists.

Beyond the Fright Fest scare zone, Midsummer Scream visitors will find more than 15 haunted attractions and displays waiting in the 76,000 square feet of darkness. Several popular haunts will be returning to the Hall of Shadows, including Mable’s 6 Feet Under, Dead Zone 805, and Hyde Street Massacre. The Hall will feature many new experiences and participants as well, including the home haunt by Murder House Productions from Thousand Oaks that took the community by storm last Halloween - a highly-detailed fan tribute to the cult classic film Trick ‘r Treat.

Gantom Lighting & Controls has partnered with Midsummer Scream, offering lighting assistance for many of the on-site haunts, as has Fog It Up!, which is supplying complimentary fog juice to each of the attractions in the Hall of Shadows; both companies will help in giving fans a theme park-quality experience they won’t soon forget.

“Hall of Shadows has become a cornerstone of Midsummer Scream,” says Rick West, the convention’s Creative Director. “The lineup of not just amazing haunted attractions, but live entertainment and dedicated artisans we have for our expanded Hall this year is truly exciting. Returning guests will be wowed by how much bigger the Hall has become as we continue to create Halloween Night in Southern California inside the Long Beach Convention Center in the middle of summer. This is our love letter to haunt fans and the community!”

Among the creatures that will be lurking in the darkness within the Hall of Shadows are members of the Decayed Brigade, which returns for its third year at Midsummer Scream to delight audiences three times daily with “sliding” shows that demonstrate their incredible agility as scareactors at several of the Southland’s major Halloween events each fall.

Guests holding Gold Bat Weekend Passes get early access to the Hall of Shadows each morning at 10am, an hour before the venue opens to the general public. Gold Bat Passholders will also enjoy priority access to each walk-through attraction in the Hall, bypassing the standby queues.

More detailed information regarding Hall of Shadows can be found here, on the official Midsummer Scream website at MidsummerScream.org.

Midsummer Scream’s 40% off pre-sale ticket discount is available through April 30. If you haven’t purchased your ticket yet, now is the time, because once the sale is over - the deep discounts for this year’s Midsummer Scream will forever rest in peace! Hardcore fans also have a VIP ticket option - the Gold Bat Weekend Pass, which is only $85.00 while supplies last (not discounted). The Gold Bat Weekend Pass grants early entry to the Midsummer Scream vendor show floor and Hall of Shadows an hour before the public each day, a collectible credential and lanyard, and a limited-edition Gold Bat enamel pin. It also gives passholders priority entry to Main Stage, Hall of Shadows haunts and attractions, and other components of Midsummer Scream all weekend-long. Supplies are limited, and the Gold Bat Weekend Pass option will sell out.

Midsummer Scream is expected to draw more than 20,000 fans to Southern California during its July 28 - 29 run at the Long Beach Convention Center. The show will feature more than 250 artisan vendors on a massive show floor, the beloved Black Cat Lounge adoption and cuddle area, live entertainment throughout the venue, world-class panels and presentations, educational seminars and classes, a large-scale Saturday night costume party, a bigger Hall of Shadows haunted attractions experience zone than ever before, and thousands of spooky cosplayers in elaborate costumes!

Valencia, California, April 26, 2018— The Second Annual Seasonal Attraction Leadership Symposium is July 30th, 2018, hosted by the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California and produced by Gantom Lighting & Controls. The theme of this year’s event is “First Impressions.” Besides presentations by leading industry professionals on this theme, the day’s activities will include a tour of the Queen Mary and an exclusive preview of the upcoming “Dark Harbor” Halloween event.

Register via Eventbrite here.

Crafting memorable first impressions using the key elements of elevation, insight, pride, and connection is the touchstone for presentations at this year’s event. Added to this year’s symposium will be discussions following each speaker’s presentation. During these discussions, attendees will meet and share their thoughts about what they just learned and use workbooks to integrate this into their experience and vision for their own attractions. Deepening the learning using the discussion and workbook format assures the information goes home with the participant and becomes part of their reservoir of knowledge.

For this year’s event, Gantom is seeking speakers on the theme of “First Impressions” as well as moderators to lead discussions following each presentation; contact Philip ([email protected]) to apply.

…And In the Spirt of Now,
Universal Studios Hollywood Announces that Its
All-New DreamWorks Theatre Featuring “Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor’s Quest”
Will Officially Open on June 15

Universal City, CA, April 17, 2018 – Universal Studios Hollywood channels its inner Master Shifu from DreamWorks Animations hit film, Kung Fu Panda, with today’s gift announcing Friday, June 15 as the official grand opening date of its all-new DreamWorks Theatre featuring the premier attraction, “Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor’s Quest.”

Inspired by the global blockbuster franchise, the attraction will take guests on a thrilling journey that fuses captivating storytelling with state-of-the art visual effects for a highly engaging experience.

Created and produced by DreamWorks Animation and Universal Creative, “Kung Fu Panda:  The Emperor’s Quest” recounts a plot filled story whereby on the morning of The Emperor’s Great Feast of Heroes, dragon warrior Po embarks on a wild and perilous mission to deliver the rare and precious Liquid of Limitless Power to the Palace, while enlisting guests to join him on the exciting adventure filled with raging rapids, river pirates, awesome magic and Kung Fu.

With cutting-edge technology at the forefront of the multi-sensory attraction, “Kung Fu Panda:  The Emperor’s Quest” will introduce the first-ever integration of interior projection mapping designed to engulf guests in 180 degrees of immersive adventure.  Developed by the innovative team at Universal Creative, this never-before-adapted technique will depict a series of immersive and visually dynamic scenic designs that will transform within the interior space and enhance the story. With detailing that is so precise, it will be near impossible to realize the projected imagery is a mere illusion.

Coupled with seven Christie 4K Boxer Cinema Projectors and 360 degree surround sound audio, sweeping physical effects from water to wind will empower guests to feel more like participants than spectators in the adrenaline-spiked adventure.

Featuring an original score by composer Germaine Franco, the storyline begins as guests enter the pre-show area of the theatre where they meet an array of DreamWorks characters who kick-off the attraction’s narrative. From there, guests will enter the main theatre, complete with new ultra-plush, fully articulated seats that pivot and swivel in tandem with the 180-degree action.

The newly constructed building that houses the DreamWorks Theatre is inspired by Mission revival architecture and harkens back to the Golden Age of Hollywood’s Art Deco period of the 1920s, including a box office ticket seller booth, reminiscent of the time period and staffed by a three-dimensional usher asleep on the job.

As guests navigate past the ticket booth, through the flourishing outdoor garden and into the theatre queue, they will encounter a series of 36 movie posters that pay homage to DreamWorks Animation films. Within the lobby, a selection of over 20 award statuettes will be on display, representing a sampling of the Golden Globe, Emmy, People’s Choice, Critic’s Choice, National Board of Review and Annie awards DreamWorks Animation has amassed from 2008 to 2015. A collection of original sculpted maquettes of the “Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor’s Quest” characters will also be on display along with artifacts embodying magical powers that Po brought back from the Spirit Realm.
