Phoenix Comicon has expanded its partnership with Kids Need to Read.

Every year, Phoenix Comicon donates proceeds from the sale of Fast Passes, entrance fees to the Poker Tournament, and ticket sales to our B.R.A. hosted evening event.

This year, we've launched a literacy program with KNTR. The pilot school chosen for the program is JB Sutton Elementary School, a Title I school in Phoenix. All participants will receive complimentary day passes to Phoenix Comicon. Grand prize winners will receive a VIP exclusive opportunity from Phoenix Comicon.

Filming Firsts:
·         Marine iguanas and racer snakes - For the first time, the PLANET EARTH II team filmed marine iguanas and their frantic dash for safety across their hatching beaches while being pursued by huge numbers of racer snakes.
·         Birds of paradise - The bright and beautiful colors of birds of paradise in West Papua have been filmed before, but recently scientists realized that they had been looking at the displays in the wrong way. For the first time the crew filmed the display of the tiny Wilson’s bird of paradise, not from the ground but looking down on him from above, up in a tree – the same way a female would see him.
·         Araguaia dolphin - This new species of dolphin was discovered in the Amazon River in 2014, over 930 miles from the ocean and found nowhere else on Earth; almost nothing is known about them. The production team tracked them through the flooded forest to get the first glimpse of these dolphins in the wild. Using stabilized cameras mounted on boats and drones, the crew filmed them from both the water and the air.
·         Bat hunting scorpions on the ground - Dubbed “the hardest bat in the world,” the desert long-eared bat takes on the death stalker scorpion, one of the most poisonous scorpions on Earth. Thanks to some immunity to their stings, the long-eared bat comes out on top. Collaborating with scientists in Bristol and Israel, this is the first time this behavior has been filmed.
·         Glowing fungi - These are the brightest fungi in the world, and while previously a mystery, scientists have now discovered the fungi may glow in order to trick beetles that use bioluminescence to attract mates. For the first time, new low-light cameras allowed the team to film the amorous beetles attracted to the glowing mushrooms.
·         Snow leopards - The crew embarked on three trips in successive years to film snow leopards in Ladakh. In total the crew was on location for 16 weeks, and the camera traps were in the field for 15 months deployed along trails and scenting rocks used by the leopards. In PLANET EARTH II they’re shown brushing right up against the camera! This is the first time four snow leopards have been filmed at one time as they mate, hunt, and fight, making it the most complete film of snow leopard behavior.
·         Zavodovski penguin commute - In what was probably the most intrepid shoot of the entire series, the “Islands” team set off on a seven-day journey by sailboat across the planet’s roughest ocean to get to the remote island of Zavodovski in the middle of the Antarctic sea. Very few people have ever visited this island and no one has ever managed to capture the amazing endeavor of the chinstrap penguins. Every day they have to face fierce stormy seas that batter them against the rocky cliffs as they try to get on and off the island to go out on their vital daily fishing trips.
·         Bee-eaters catching insects flushed out by elephants - Carmine bee-eaters in Botswana follow elephants and other large animals that walk through the grass hoping to catch any flying insects they stir up into the air as they push through the vegetation. The team noticed that the birds were following their vehicle as it stirred insects, similar to how they would with elephants. So they sat a cameraman on the front corner of the jeep, strapped on a harness that supported a stabilized camera rig and filmed incredible shots tracking with the birds as they hunted in the air.
·         Bobcats hunting in the Rockies in winter - Cameraman John Shier spent five weeks in the freezing conditions in the Rockies during winter, waiting to capture elusive bobcat hunting behavior. This is the first time ever these cats have been filmed hunting ducks and squirrels.
·         Railroad worms hunting millipedes - Railroad worms are actually bioluminescent beetles that use two different lights on their bodies – greenish yellow ones to deter predators and a red glowing head to use as a “night vision” hunting light.
·         Catfish hunting pigeons - This is a relatively recently described behavior where, much like killer whales hunting seals by rushing up onto beaches, these catfish wait in ambush at the edge of a river for pigeons to come and bathe. When the birds gather at the water’s edge, the fish thrust themselves at the pigeons, grab them in their mouths, and then drag them underwater.
·         Goshawks predating on sand grouse - The “Deserts” team set off to the South African desert to film sand grouse visiting water holes to collect water for their young. But what they stumbled across was far more dramatic: a pair of resident goshawks that had learned to wait around the waterholes and grab the grouse as they land. The goshawks know that, even though the grouse are aware that these predators are there, they can’t afford not to drink in the extreme desert heat. Never filmed before, this a compelling story of the grouse risking death to bring back water to quench their chick’s thirst.
·         Lions hunting giraffe - The PLANET EARTH II team joined forces with camera operator Lianne Steenkamp, who has been following the same pride of desert lions in Namibia for the past few years. Combining specially shot material with some incredible footage captured over the years allowed the crew to showcase the most dramatic giraffe and lion hunt ever filmed in the “Deserts” episode.
·         Locusts - For one month the team headed out to the arid regions of Madagascar to try to find and film a locust swarm. After some initial success the crew’s luck completely ran out. Up until the last few days it looked like they would come back empty handed, but finally the team caught up with a swarm of biblical proportions. New technology such as MoVi’s and drones allowed the crew to get right into the heart of the swarm, as well as film it from the air.
·         Leopards hunting pigs in Mumbai - Mumbai has the highest concentration of leopards in the world. This is the most complete sequence of urban leopard behavior to date, and the first time anyone has filmed a successful hunt. The team used a military grade thermal camera to spy on the leopards.
·         Hyperlapse - Within the “Cities” episode the crew used hyperlapse technique to immerse the audience in the urban environment. Rob Whitworth is the most accomplished hyperlapse cameraman of our day. He collaborated with the “Cities” team to create jaw-dropping seamless journeys through some of the most iconic cities of the world.·         Peregrines hunting in New York - New York City has the highest concentration of nesting peregrines in the world. This is the first time that the wild behavior of these urban birds has been filmed, capturing aerials of the fastest bird in the world dropping from a height at speeds of up to 200 mph.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment continues its annual WonderCon tradition with the exclusive World Premiere of Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, the next DC Universe Original Movie, on the evening of Friday, March 31, 2017 at WonderCon Anaheim in the Arena of the Anaheim Convention Center.

Teen Titans: The Judas Contract will screen at 6:00pm in the 4,000-seat Arena, followed by a panel discussion amongst the film’s acting stars and filmmakers.

The entertaining post-screening panel will feature Sean Maher (Firefly/Serenity, Batman: Bad Blood), the voice of Nightwing; Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story) as Raven; Jake T. But their newest teammate, the mysterious and powerful Terra (voiced by Christina Ricci), may be altering that dynamic. Custom VR Installation Opens in April, 2017, Exclusively at Knott's Berry Farm

Buena Park, CA – March 8, 2017 – Knott's Berry Farm, its parent company Cedar Fair Entertainment and VRstudios announced today the details of the first permanent installation of a free-roaming, multi-player VR experience in a U.S. theme park, which will be located inside the Knott's Berry Farm Boardwalk Arcade. A new custom and industry first virtual reality (VR) experience, "VR Showdown in Ghost Town" will make its debut in April, and is exclusively available at Knott's Berry Farm.

The immersive and interactive VR attraction will invite guests to embark on a time travel adventure, which will transport them to a futuristic version of Knott's western town of Calico. Players will be met by robotic creations and embark on a daring mission with other groups of players to defend the town.
The one-of-a-kind immersive experience perfectly combines virtual reality and a competitive gaming realm that will captivate guests. Armed with state-of-the-art wireless virtual reality headsets and futuristic blasters, multiple players will compete against one another for the highest score and bragging rights, as part of this immersive adventure, while striving toward shared team goals. At the end of the VR competition, guests will be able to view and compare scores with their fellow opponents.

March 8, 2017 – Tickets are now on sale for Midsummer Scream 2017, which will be hosted at the Long Beach Convention Center Saturday and Sunday, July 29-30. After a stellar debut last year, Midsummer Scream returns to Long Beach with a vengeance for a weekend of non-stop Halloween fun, haunted attractions, world-class panel presentations, live entertainment, makeup demonstrations, amazing vendors, and a sinister after-hours party in one of the most iconic paranormal activity locations in the world – the Queen Mary.

Fans attending Midsummer Scream 2017 are in for an early Halloween treat, as virtually every aspect of the convention is bigger and better this year, including:

World-Class Presentations and Bigger Main Stage Venue
As the official kick-off event for the Halloween season in Southern California, Midsummer Scream features an unparalleled lineup of major presentations by the largest tourist attractions on the West Coast. This year’s epic Main Stage lineup includes Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights, Knott’s Scary Farm, Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor, and Six Flags Magic Mountain Fright Fest. These Main Stage presentations will be held in the beautiful, state-of-the-art Terrace Theater, which features comfortable seating for up to 3,000 screaming fans.

Hall of Shadows Mini Haunts & Slider Exhibitions
A wildly-popular component of Midsummer Scream, the Hall of Shadows returns in 2017 featuring 14 terrifying previews of popular Halloween attractions coming this fall to Southern California. In addition to the Hall’s “mini haunts”, the high-energy slider exhibition team, Decayed Brigade, will perform several times each day, thrilling fans with incredible feats of athletic prowess and stunning agility.

Monstrous Saturday Night Party Aboard the Queen Mary
With one of the most popular paranormal activity hot spots in the world looming next to the Long Beach Convention Center, it’s a nightmarish dream come true to announce that Midsummer Scream’s Saturday night party will be hosted aboard the Queen Mary by the denizens of the deep during Dark Harbor’s Sinister Circus. Fans and freaks will dance the night away while enjoying breathtaking views of Long Beach Harbor from the ship’s Sports Deck, which will feature terrifying decorum, lurking monsters, and many of your favorite characters from Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor!

Live Entertainment, Haunting Theatrical Experiences, and Horror Galore
Throughout the weekend, Midsummer Scream will offer a wide variety of live entertainment and chilling experiences, ranging from family-friendly to extreme. Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group returns in 2017 with a special Urban Death production definitely not for the faint of heart. The creators of Return Home Podcast come to Midsummer Scream this year with a venue-wide “choose your own adventure” experience, and Force of Nature Productions will make its convention debut with an interactive theatrical attraction sure to make your flesh crawl and heart pound! Other “pop-up” entertainers will be found throughout the weekend engaging Midsummer Scream guests, including renowned magician Jimmy H as he returns to Long Beach as the ghoulishly delightful Mudd The Magnificent. Guests will also enjoy an expanded art exhibition space this year – the Nightmare Gallery, curated by industry designer Lee Shamel.

Inspiring Education and Hands-On Workshops
For guests looking to roll up their sleeves a bit, or put on their thinking caps, Midsummer Scream will offer outstanding educational classes and seminars at no extra charge to interested ticketholders on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, guests will also have opportunities throughout the weekend to participate in fun make-and-take workshops for a nominal materials fee. The variety of educational options at Midsummer Scream is created to appeal to everyone, from haunt enthusiasts to aspiring designers and cosplay lovers.

Frightful Film Fest
Guests will be treated to an on-going program of frightful films, first-person haunted attraction videos by Theme Park Adventure, and exciting Q&A sessions with special guests in the Screaming Room, presented by HorrorBuzz.com.

Massive Show Floor
The soul of Midsummer Scream is its massive Show Floor, featuring more than 200 artisans and vendors selling everything from scary apparel to one-of-a-kind horror props and memorabilia. Confirmed vendors at Midsummer Scream 2017 include Immortal Masks, Bone Yard Effects, Dark Delicacies, Cross Roads Escape Games, Clive Barker’s Seraphim Inc., Kreepsville 666, The Haunt Store, Fog It Up!, and Bearded Lady’s Mystic Museum. Also located on the Show Floor will be our Kids Zone, hosted by Buster Balloon, where Midsummer Scream’s youngest fans can busy themselves with Halloween arts and crafts and engage in festival games and activities.

Blanc-Biehn Productions' The Girl Nominated for 2017 Saturn Award

(LOS ANGELES, CA / March 7, 2017) – Independent film company Blanc-Biehn Productions' horror film The Girl has been honored with a Saturn Award nomination for excellence.

The tense sci-fi thriller is up for a Saturn in the Best DVD/BD Release in the Home Entertainment category, stars Michael Biehn and is directed by his Blanc-Biehn Productions partner and wife, Jennifer Blanc-Biehn.

"A big thank you to the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films for recognizing this exceptional film with a Saturn Award nomination," Blanc-Biehn said of The Girl, which was released domestically in January of this year and has already won Best Feature Film in the Sci-Fi-Fantasy- Horror-Thriller category at the 2016 Burbank Film Festival.

Blanc-Biehn and Biehn will also be in attendance at the 2017 Saturn Awards in Burbank Junw 28 to celebrate the festivities and cheer on their film, which stars Evie Louise Thompson (Boyhood) as the kidnap victim of a psychopath (Biehn) who holds her hostage in his backyard shed.

When the kidnapper's son discovers - then rescues - The Girl, the two set off a terrifying chain of events, brilliantly showcasing Blanc-Biehn's skillful direction and Biehn's compelling onscreen performance.

Released through United Front Entertainment, eOne Films, Sony and Tony Perez at Splash House Pictures, the film was written by Bradley and Kevin Marcus, executive produced and based on a story by executive producer Lony Ruhman, written by The Marcus Brothers (Kevin and Bradley Marcus) and also stars Tia Carrere, Tristan DeVan, Lorraine Ziff, Hallie Jordan, Jenise Blanc, Raven Carell, Grace Powell, Dana Daurey and Nick Nicholson.
